The Gerund in English Grammar

 

The Gerund

A Gerund is a kind of Noun made out of a Verb. It is formed from the Base form of Verb by adding 'ing'. It acts partly a verb and partly a noun. So it is also called a Verbal Noun.

Ex:Walk - Walking, Talk - Talking, Eat - Eating, Work - Working


Some Uses of Gerund are as follows:-


The Gerund as the subject in a sentence

1. Walking is a good exercise.

2. Hunting animals is an offence.

3. Brushing keeps your teeth healthy.

4. Going to party is a fun.

5. Smoking causes cancer.


The Gerund as the object in a sentence.

1. I like swiming. 

2. Reyaz likes reading.

3. Akram discards playing.


The Gerund as the compliment of a verb:

1. Ahmed is studying in class iv.

2. Boys are playing in the ground.

3. A life pleasure is having breakfast in the morning.


The Gerund after preposition:

1. He is fond of writing.

3.  She is good at dancing.

4. We reached Lal Qila after driving whole day.
