WB Civil Service Examination Prelims Scheme and Syllabus


WEST BENGAL, CIVIL SERVICE (EXECUTIVE) ETC. EXAMINATION, 2014

The West Bengal Civil Services Examination commences annually or as and when announced by the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC). The examination is held in three stages- (1) Preliminary, (2) Mains, and (3) Interview. Aspirants taking the exam have to qualify WBCS eligibility criteria set by the commission.

ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA

i)        A candidate must be an Indian citizen (either natural or by registration.)

ii)      A candidate must have good health and character and suitability in all respects for appointment to Government service.

iii)    A candidate should be able to read, write and speak in Bengali (Candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali are excluded).

iv)    A Candidate must have a Degree from a recognized university in India.

 

Age Limits

Minimum WBCS Age Limit

i)        Group A and C – 21 years

ii)      Group B – 20 years (For West Bengal Police Service only)

iii)    Group D – 21 years

 

Maximum WBCS Age Limit 

i)        Group A and C – 36 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination)

ii)      Group B – 36 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination)

iii)    Group D – 39 years (As on January 1 of the year of the examination)

 

Age Relaxation

i)        Schedule Caste: Five Years

ii)      Schedule Tribe: Five Years

iii)    OBC:                  Three Years

iv)    PWD:                  Up to 45 Years

 

SCHEME AND SYLLABUS for PRELIMS

Preliminary Examination: The Preliminary Examination will consist of only one paper, viz., a paper on "General Studies". The paper will be of an objective type consisting of 200 multiple- choice questions. The paper will carry 200 marks and will be of 22 hours duration. The standard of the paper will be of the level of knowledge as expected of a graduate of any faculty of a recognized University. The paper will include questions covering the following fields of knowledge:

The Preliminary Examination is meant to serve as a Screening Test only for the purpose of selection of candidates for the Main Examination. The marks obtained in this examination by the candidates will not be considered for final selection. Only those candidates who will be declared qualified at the Preliminary Examination in a year will be eligible for admission to the W.B.C.S. (Exe.) etc. (Main) Examination of that year.
